It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on Swirls of Noise, so here’s an extra long playlist for you guys with a lot of the new music I’ve been listening to lately.
Anneke Van Giersbergen appears twice, her new classical collaboration with Arstidir on the horizon, while the live recordings from The Gathering’s 25th anniversary show finally get a release, and she’s joined by more female fronted rock coming from Delain and Anette Olzon. Black metal is widely represented with tracks from Icelanders Naðra and (), dissonance from Voidcraeft, Mussorgski’s cold industrial, Primeval Mass’ typically epic Greek variant – and of course everyone’s favourite BM lunatic Abbath. Cybergrinders Agoraphobic Nosebleed have gone sludge, joined by the miserable dirges of A Thousand Sufferings, and a turbo charged Conan. Death metal is more than adequately represented with some familiar names and some not so – Cthe’illist’s caustic murk and Khazaddum’s tech-death both being intriguing listens. Megadeth return with their faster than lightning new guitarist Kiko Loureiro, and who wouldn’t be interested in Venomous Concept – a hardcore punk supergroup with members of Napalm Death and Brutal Truth? Norwegian wolves Ulver and their brooding electronics beckon in the softer side of the playlist, followed by the Dead Can Dance meets Tangerine Dream vibe of Dissvarth and soft ambience of Brave Timbers.
And while I try to promote lesser known, yet equally deserving artists here on Swirls of Noise – how could we not end with the last track from the incredible discography of the sadly late genius David Bowie?
